Chapter 27 - After the Sickly Beauty Transmigrated Into a Book, He Married the Arrogant Crown Prince
Chapter 27
Pei Ji stepped out of the Yan Nuan Pavilion, and Qu Lan immediately followed.
"Your Highness, it has been verified. The carriage was originally supposed to head towards the Song Xiang Restaurant tonight, but it changed course midway. The man and the guards who intercepted it are all people of the regent. It seems to be a deliberate arrangement."
"Mm."
Qu Lan continued, "The identity of the black-clad man is uncertain. My subordinates examined the wounds on the bodies of the two servants and found them to be knife wounds, one strike to kill. Moreover..." He hesitated a bit.
"Go on."
"From the knife technique, it seems somewhat likely that this person is one of the assassins from the Shadowless Pavilion that targeted Marquis Xiao a while back. Rumor has it that the eight top assassins each use different weapons, and this time it resembles the one who uses a knife. I wonder how the Side Lord ended up being targeted by the Shadowless Pavilion." Qu Lan said.
Pei Ji crossed his arms and walked to the pavilion in the middle of the lake. The moonlight was bright and clear, reflecting on the gently rippling surface of the water. The cool breeze blew gently, as if trying to disperse the restlessness in one's heart.
He gently raised his hand, his fingertips touching his lips.
That feeling just now was very peculiar, unlike the day he was drugged. The feeling from when he forcefully kissed Song Beiyao after taking the drug, was different.
After a long pause, he spoke heavily, "It's not uncommon for the Shadowless Pavilion to interfere in the affairs of various countries' courts. They have their eyes on Song Beiyao, perhaps targeting me. You should assign two more guards to the Yan Nuan Pavilion and don't let him leave the mansion for the time being.”
"Yes." Qu Lan replied, then continued, "Your Highness, there is another matter. There has been some progress with the investigation about the Side Lords’s whereabouts when he left his palace."
"Speak."
"When the Side Lord left the palace at the age of seven, he was sent to Qing Luan Villa in Great Zhou and stayed there until he was fifteen, before being summoned back to the country." Qu Lan said, "I have investigated, and Qing Luan Mountain Villa has been gone for three years now. I don't know what the Side Lord was doing there for eight years."
"Keep investigating."
"Yes, Your Highness."

Prince Xin's residence.
A shadow silently slipped into the study, and the candle on the desk flickered momentarily.
Pei Ming set down his brush and ink, pointed to the freshly brewed hot tea nearby and said, "Su Yue, I just made some tea. Would you like to try it?"
"You know, I don't drink tea." The man in black placed the bloodied knife in front of Pei Ming, the droplets of blood rolled off, dripping onto the paper.
"I've already killed the person. Next time, don't make me kill such a beautiful person; I almost couldn't bring myself to do it.”
Su Yue sat directly on the corner of the desk.
Pei Ming smiled calmly, "The one who personally slaughtered your entire family, and yet you can't bring yourself to kill them?"
"Who knows?" Su Yue twirled the knife in the air, the blade directly resting against Pei Ming's neck, "I can't bring myself to kill you, Prince Xin."
Pei Ming's eyes flashed with caution, and he raised his hand to push the knife aside, "Then I suppose I should really feel fortunate."
He continued, "Even though that person is dead, Su Yue, I still need you to stay in Lidu and help me keep an eye on the Crown Prince's residence."
The young man opened his palm towards him, a wicked smile curling his lips, "Sure, give me the medicine first."
Pei Ming took a vial from the hidden compartment by the table and handed it over, saying, "This time, it's enough for two months."
"Okay." Su Yue flipped the medicine bottle up and down, picked up the knife, and walked out, saying, "Remember to find me a better place to stay."

Song Beiyao had never felt this physically exhausted.
It was like carrying dozens of kilograms of luggage, trekking through the Gobi desert, while withstanding the wind and sun, starving and aching all over. As he inhaled, the air sliced through his throat like a blade, traveling into his lungs like sand, before being expelled as a stale breath.
Tired, thirsty, hungry, pain...
Occasionally, he could hear someone speaking beside him. However, he couldn’t open his eyes.
Ugh, my eyelids feel as heavy as lead.
His consciousness drifted in the sea for a while, before finally making it to shore.
…
He struggled to open his eyes and as usual, first checked his luck value. -183.
Truly a return to the pre-liberation era.
[Oh dear, host, it's already great that you're alive. You can always earn more luck points, there's plenty of time ahead!] The system advised him.
Song Beiyao coughed violently and clutched his chest. He leaned his head over the edge of the bed, and spat out a few mouthfuls of blood.
"Master!!"
Li Liansheng had just finished fetching a basin of water from outside, when he saw that the side lord had awakened and was leaning over the side of the bed, coughing up mouthfuls of blood. Startled, he hurriedly shouted outside, "Ling Feng, the master is awake!"
Quickly, he walked to the bedside, put down the basin, wrung out the cloth, and began to wipe the blood off of Song Beiyao.
With a face full of fear, Li Liansheng said, “You really scared us to death this time, master. When I came over and saw you covered in blood, I thought–” He shut his mouth. “I thought—”
“—Thought I wasn't going to make it, huh?" Song Beiyao laid back on the bed. Smiling weakly, he reassured Li Liansheng. “It’s okay. I’m tough.”
Li Liansheng frowned, concern seeping into his face. "Master, please don't go out of the residence anymore. It's very unsafe outside!"
Song Beiyao coughed a few times and shook his head.
To be honest, the Crown Prince's residence isn't necessarily that safe either.
